Edward had scooped Renesmee up after he returned with Carlisle. His face was in turmoil. Carlisle and Esme were deeply saddened. "What happened?" Bella asked as she looked from all of them. Carlisle handed her a note. "Alice and Jasper have left us." Bella felt her heart sink in her chest as she looked at Edward, who just nodded.
After saying their goodbyes for the night, needing to get Renesmee home in her own bed, they headed to their cottage. Barely any words spoken. She sat on the couch as he put her to bed. Staring at the note, trying to figure out the reasoning.
Edward entered as she placed the note on the coffee table and sighed. He sat beside her as she spoke, "It's funny. Physically I feel like I could demolish a tank...emotionally, I just feel....drained." He kissed her forehead and smiled.
"How about a bath?" She smiled back as she looked up into his eyes. She looked back to the note and closed her eyes, wishing she could understand it all. "I've had a bad habit of underestimating you. Every obstacle you've faced, I didn't think you could overcome it...but...you just did. You are the reason I have something to fight for...my family."
She leaned closer to him as she felt his lips touch hers. Soft and passionately he kissed her. Pulling away and running a hand through her hair he smiled. "I'll go get the water running." He said as he left the room.
Turning the note over as she examined it, seeing the cover page of a book. The note was written on a torn page from 'The Merchant of Venice." She owned a copy of that book. Strange. Bella turned her attention to the bookshelf as she flashed to it, on to something.
Pulling her copy off the shelf she opened it to see a page missing. It fit perfectly from the torn edges. Flipping another page that's when she sees it.
J. Jenks-Seattle Destroy this!
She tore the page out just as Edward entered. "I'm coming." Bella said as she smiled at him, not to cause an alert to him. He nodded and left the room again as she threw the page into the fireplace. Watching the paper burn she knew what she had to do. Alice left that note for a reason. This was hardly the time to doubt her. As if nothing were wrong, she headed for the bathroom for a nice hot bath.
