Scribbling at vampiric speed the events of the previous day commmiting them to record so they will not be forgotten.
We sat there all day and night long, rendered numb from the shock that Alice never came home. Looking around at my adpotive family each looking as if they were at their breaking point. Jacob returns asking questions which I try to answer without ratcheting up everyones emotional grief. Processing the information quickly, Jacob lies down falling into almost instant sleep. Sunrise seemed to thaw our frozen inactivity bringing this to the surface. Edward looks to me with a renewed sense of panic asking, "If my thinking was that Alice foresaw someone coming for her." Knowing Aro, who has done a through search of Alice's mind, he would outthink her.
Emmett stirs from his seat swearing startling Jacob from his slumber who rose with a growl, which was echoed by this pack in the yard. This seemed to stir everyone into action. Bella streaks out of the house yelling to Jacob to stay with Renesmee. My family was a blur racing through the forest, looking at Edward to my right asking him if they would surprise her. Edward replied, "I don't see how, but Aro knows her better than anyone." Emmett chimes in with, "Is this a trap?" Edward answer him with a "maybe." There's not scent of Alice and Jasper. This makes him ask "Where could they have been going?"
We pick up their scent trail but it's a wide arc on both sides of the river leading from the house. The scent led us to the Quileute Border. From the east I could smell the scent of wolf. The scent grew stronger, stopping thinking we were at the treaty border. Edward calls out into the forest, What is this Sam? Sam comes walking out in human form, with 2 big wolves at his sides. Watching Edwards face change, instantly thinking he's reading Sam's thoughts. Sam walks up to me telling me that Alice and Jasper came to this place asking for permission to cross their land to the ocean. He said he himself escorted them to the coast. The walked into the water and never returned. Alice had told him not to mention to them to Jacob only to talk to me, to wait here for you to show up looking for her, and to give you this note. She told him that all of our lives might depend on it. He hands me a piece of folded paper. Looking at the page with familiar handwriting, whispering, "Alice has decided to leave us." Rosalie cried, "what?"
I turn the page towards them to read:
Don't look for us. There isn't time to waste. Remember: Tanya, Siobhan, Amun, Alistair, all the nomads you can find. We'll seek out Peter and Charlotte on our way. We're so sorry that we have to leave you this way, with no goodbyes or explainations. It's the only way for us. We love you.
We stood there silent the only thing that could be heard is the wolves' heartbeats, them breathing. Edward moves speaking to Sam in answer from something he overheard in his thoughts. "Yes things are that dangerous."
Sams tone was slightly condeming, "Enough to leave your family," he asked. My feelings is he seemed to regret listening to what Alice said. Edward replies to his question "Alice is neither unfeeling nor a coward. She had more information that we do."
Sam started to open his mouth and Edward shuts him down with, "You are bound differently that we are, we have our free will." Sam expression changed, his eyes hard. Edward continues but you should heed the warning, "This is something you don't want to involve yourselves in, you can avoid what Alice saw."
"We don't run away." Sam said. I quietly put in, "Don't get your family slaughter for pride." Sam expression softened saying, "As Edward pointed out we don't have the same kind of freedom that you have. Renesmee is as much a part of our family now as she is yours. Jacob cannot abandon her, and we won't abandon him."
Edward said, "You don't know her." Sam reply was blunt, "Do you?" Walking over to Edward placing a comforting hand on him, "We have much to do, son. Whatever Alice's decision, we would be foolish not to allow her advice now. Let's go home and get to work."
Edward nods pain etched on his face, I could hear Esme quiet sobs. I walk up holding out my hand saying, "Thank You Sam." Sam answers with, "I'm sorry, we shouldn't have let her through."
I tell him, You did the right thing, Alice is free to do what she will. I wouldn't deny her that liberty."
We head back towards the house with a resigned purpose.
