Emmett let out a loud guffaw which make me wonder what was going on now. Charlie had just left from his visit as it seemed to go well, considering the short amount of time she’d gotten to practice acting human. The contacts had finally dissolved as she stood, trying to calm herself not to hurt Jacob. Edward clasped her hand and smiled as he decided to give Bella his long awaited gift he’d waited for. She was now apprehensive of what laid ahead, what more could she possibly be gifted with. As she was led out of the main house and to the garage that held all Cullen cars she sighed. “Oh no…not that…now?” She asked, embarrassed that she’d forgotten. How could she forget the thing that sat underneath a tarp in the darkest farthest corner of the garage. Her after car. He handed her the keys and urged her to see for herself. It was now or never, might as well get it over with. As the door lifted and she walked inside and was taken aback by a cherry red sports car. “It’s a Ferrari F430, latest model. Do you like it?”
Bella smiled and turned over her shoulder. “It’s beautiful, but I like to run.” she said with a slightly impish grin. As she approached it and ran a finger along the smooth surface paint of the bright red sports car, one that probably went fast, but not as fast as she could on foot, being semi-proud of that. It made her remember her “before car”……
**FLASHBACK**
It finally died. Ran its last run, gave its last mile...Bella's 1963 Chevy StepSide C-10 pickup had finally keeled over. She'd objected Edward's insistance on getting a new vehicle earlier, compromising that when it finally wouldn't run, she'd allow him to buy her a car. He and his family had had many years to collect funds, and she was sure it wouldn't run out anytime soon. She'd only asked for it not to be too flashy...Who was she kidding, this was Edward Cullen. He was not one to be...plain. After days of objections she finally gave up. He called to say he'd be there in twenty to bring her to his place for her surprise. She sighed and dressed herself, secretly praying it was some beat up vehicle that was aged and ancient but dependable.
The whole drive he smirked as if he'd ate the canary and she shook her head only imagining what he had up his sleeve. Sure, it wasn't enough that everyone in town looked at her funny because of coarse, word got around in Forks--She was engaged to Edward Cullen. With the wedding only weeks away, she just wanted the hype to die down. "I bet she's pregnant!", "Oh, she's just a gold digger." , "Oh how young to be getting married!", The list went on and on, just like she feared. Edward had reassured her that it was not anyone else he had to please only her, and that if she were that concerned over what others said they'd wait. But she knew waiting meant she had to wait longer to be turned...and she couldn't bare to age any older than he. She figured if she could withstand the last week of Alice's wedding plans and arrangements, she could handle a new vehicle.....not to mention "Walking lessons"--her heels were so high she had to practice. Bella was sure she'd fall on her face trying to get down that isle and Alice was certain it would not happen, and if anyone would know it'd be Alice.
As they pulled into the drive that were surrounded by trees that cast shadows onto the path. She felt him squeeze her hand to calm her nerves as they rounded the curves of the dirt path that led to the Cullen home. It was about a mile from the main highway. The Cullens liked their privacy. As Edward pulled in and put the car in park, in a flash he was opening her door before she had her seatbelt unbuckled. He led her inside where she greeted the rest of the family. Alice busy with the guest list as she gave a small wave from the table full of papers, bulletin boards with pins and plans. Alice was in heaven planning the biggest event Forks had seen. Bella only wanted to be informed of dire important things, the rest...was all Alice.
Emmett made a crack about her "before" car as she quirked a brow. "You know...this one is before you become one of us.." He barked out a laugh and playfully fist bumped Edward's shoulder. Edward was still not happy about her decision to be turned, but a compromise had been met and she still had one last human thing to do. He led her to the family's garage where she saw a car tarp covering something. She took a breath in, waiting to be mortified at some level. As he pulled the sheet off to reveal the black car she sighed at its somewhat normal features….little did she know, it would ward off most missile attacks. She was practically driving a tank, her dream of staying under the radar---gone. Bella was asked to take pictures with the popular car that wasn’t even available in the states yet. She felt the blood rush to her cheeks, a soft pink color filling her face as she slumped down in the seat. “Go to your happy place” was all she could say.
***PRESENT DAY***
Bella wrapped her arms around Edward and smiled. “It’s….it’s….something.” She was trying to sound appreciative, but it was just something more that would attract unwanted attention from the locals. Edward’s lips curved into a smile. “How about a drive before Ness….I mean, Renesmee wakes?” She thought about more alone time and couldn’t pass it up. The day had been long that was certain. “Sure…but I’m driving this time.” She said playfully.
