Edward gazed out of the large paned glass window that over looked the forest of Forks as the sun began its descent behind the clouds of the horizon. The rays from the glorious sun causing his skin to glisten like diamonds as it caught the reflection from the glass as it shimmered across the tiles floor on the main lounge in the Cullen home. Edward could see everything from this window, as the forest spread for miles in every direction, across the distance he could see the borderline that led into La Push, the forbidden territory of the lands where they were forever expelled from.
Bella had gone to see Charlie and Sue for the afternoon, his siblings and his mother Esme were out on their daily hunt, minus Rosalie who was with Ryder out in the garden. How he had grown in so much time, sometimes he wished that Renesmee was that young once again, where things were simpler for her. But he could not help but think of Esme, she was sure that she wanted to help him find out any more information about his human parents, he had broken his promise to Carlisle, he promised him that he would not tell Esme, it seemed only fitting that he should know of his broken promise.
Pulling out his phone as he flipped through his contacts to the name he wanted and pressed dial as he raised the phone to his ear, as it rung through to Carlisle as he waited for an answer.

As the phone rang I had been standing in the living room of the house Esme and I had bought in New York, staring out the window in quiet contemplation. She had asked me to speak to Edward as soon as I could, and I had planned on calling him later this evening. But apparently he had plans on calling me, as well.
I picked up the phone while smiling softly. "Hello, Edward. I planned on calling you a bit later tonight. How are you? Bella? Renesmee?"

Carlisle answered his cell far quicker than he had hoped, he did not have time to even prepare for what he was calling for. As he moved around the room in a frantic pace, before deciding that sitting on the plush couch in the lounge, his hand running through his hair.
"They are both fine Carlisle, Renesmee is still...still away but she should return soon. Bella is with her father and Sue...Carlisle I called because I have an urgent matter that I must speak with you about" he whispered, trying to mentally prepare for his conversation.

I nodded my head, sighing. "I thought that might be coming," I said while moving to the window and staring out at the rain that was falling down slowly.
"What's going on, son?" I asked. I hadn't spoken to him since Renesmee's party and I felt bad for it; he was, after all, my first child. I hated that I was so far away from my family, and while part of me thought that maybe I should move back, the other part of me realized that I had an obligation to my patients, especially to Alena.

Falling back into the couch as he could not but let out a sigh, he did not know how he would react now that Esme knew of what he had been secretly doing, what he had promised Carlisle all that time ago.
"I am sorry Carlisle...But she knows, Esme knows of what I have been doing...About my human birth parents" he whispered into the speaker.
He only hoped that Carlisle could find it in him to forgive Edward for breaking his promise.

I shook my head, not upset that Esme knew but upset that Edward thought I'd be upset with him.
"It's okay, son. There is nothing to apologize for. I was wrong in assuming that Esme would be upset. I hold no fault to you, Edward. I'm not upset. But what else, Edward?" I frowned, not sure how to approach it. But, as with all things regarding Edward, I decided to take a direct approach. "Esme said that you came back home covered in blood the other day. Is there something you need to talk about?"

Edward listened to Carlisle's response as he felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders as everything that he feared Carlisle would say did not happen. It was at ease with the whole situation, he did not scorn him or call him out for his betrayal but accepted it with grace and diplomacy.
"I did not mean to break the promise that I made Carlisle, but I could not lie to her" he whispered.
But hearing Carlisle's last remark made Edward freeze, as he remembered that day.
"...It was nothing, just an overzealous elk" he lied.

I raised an eyebrow. "I may have been born at night, Edward, but it wasn't last night." I snorted quietly before coming back to my senses. Something wasn't right.
"Edward, you've never hidden anything from me. And I get the feeling that you are trying to start. I won't pester you, as you are a grown man with a child and a wife. But please know that no matter where you are or what you need, I am here for you. You need but say the word and I will be back in Forks before you know it. I'm here for you, as any father would be."
I didn't know what was going on with him, but I didn't like it. Something was bothering him, and I wanted to know what.

Edward wanted to tell Carlisle of the full troubles that he had been having, but he did not wish to burden him when he could try to work them out for himself. He could not rely on others to take on his problems as well as their own.
"I shall be fine Carlisle...I guess that my hopes of finding some information was going to be easier. But it is nothing for you to worry about...I promise" he lied through his teeth.

I shook my head, but conceded. If he didn't want to tell me, then he wouldn't. And when he did want to tell me, I'd be right there as I always had.
"Okay then. You know I only want what's best for you and the rest of the family, Edward. If there's anything I can do to help with this you will tell me, right?"

"I promise I shall" he assured him.
But how could Edward tell her that he was slipping, after all that Carlisle worked towards with him to getting him to where he was. He did not want to let Carlisle down, now not. Not when he had Bella and Renesmee at his side, his family partially scattered.
"I won't let you down" he promised.

"I believe in you, Edward. And I have no fears of you letting me down. I've always been proud of you and the man that you have become," I said with a smile. Sometimes being so far away really... how was it that the young humans put it? It sucked. Which was even funnier considering what we were.
"Feel free to come to New York if you need a break, Edward. We have plenty of room."

"Thank you Carlisle...That means everything" he smirked a little.
Edward chuckled a little when he talked about coming to New York for a break, perhaps that is what he needed. To get away from everything in Forks, clear his mind. He ever considered on giving up on his quest to find information on his birth parents.
"I will think about Carlisle" he grinned, turning his head as he saw that Bella and Emmett had returned from their hunt as they were talking about something, but Emmett was thinking about Rosalie in a way that he did not want to hear about.
"I shall call again Carlisle, I shall let you go. Bella and I have plans this evening" he spoke into the speaker.

I chuckled and shook my head. "Have fun with her. Kiss her and Renesmee for me," I said with a smile before hanging up the phone. Just as I did, the pager I had for work went off and I let out a sigh. Time to get back to the grinding stone. And as always, I was ever so thankful that I didn't need sleep.
