It was hard to believe that it had been 12 years since she had last seen her parents. 12 years since they had said goodbye with all intentions of coming home to her, only to have their life cut short by idiots wanting to "prove a point". She was so angry, had been so angry, for such a long time.
But now? Now she was sick. She was sick, and chances were great that she was going to die. It wasn't that she was afraid of dying; in truth, she welcomed it like an old friend. She would no longer hurt, no longer be alone, she would have her parents again and not be the last of the Flores' line.
As she sat in her tiny little apartment, she looked out the window towards where the Twin Towers once had stood. Her heart still ached as she thought of them; she remembered her mama's laugh, her dad's terrible jokes, and the never dying love that they had for each other. She had hoped to find a love like that, but she had since realized that when her mama said she got the last good man, she must have really meant it. She was single, had been single, and would be single... for the rest of her life. What little she had left.
"I miss you," she said softly as she pressed her fingers to her lips and then touched the window. "I promise never to forget you. Either of you. I'll see you soon."
With her heart heavy, she took the final sip of her water and went to curl up on the bed, tears falling from her eyes as quick as a summer rain. One day, soon, she'd no longer be alone...
