-I'd known being under Aro's manipulative control wasn't going to be a walk in the park. Even after all this time, he was still the small boy trying to prove he was the better man. Months had passed and at every turn, he attempted to humiliate me and did his best to provoke me into an attack that would have been my death knell.
In a fight, we were evenly matched.
But he'd never fought fair and I knew that if I attempted to take his miserable life, wrench his head from those slender shoulders, I'd have to deal with Caius and Marcus, not to mention Jane and Alec. Jane hated me, it rolled off her in waves but her opinion meant nothing to me. I'd find her crimson eyes piercing me from time to time, could see her frustration when her gift of pain went unnoticed by me.
I was immune to most things, I can't as I was a shield like Bella or Renata, but it was easy enough to repel the nasty Jane's attempts.
Plus, it pissed Aro off.
I'd refused to wear the robes of the Volturri elite. I would not lower myself as I wasn't part of their circle, I had no wish to be. I'd promised myself to Aro, not his cause.
And I was his leashed prize pet, or so he seemed to enjoy telling people.
But it was for Alice.
She was my child.
She was the reincarnation of Didyme, my beloved sister. I knew it, had always known it and I would protect her any way I could. I'd made Aro a promise for her safety and that of the Cullens.
She was worth any servitude if it kept her from being under Aro's constant watch.
"Aro wants to see you." I turned from the window I'd been staring out of, gazing across the town of Volterra and further out to the rolling, verdant hills just outside the city to see Jane scowling my way, her eyes, as usual, envisioning my death at her hands. I didn't answer her, merely gave her my back.
"He said now."
Still I didn't acknowledge her presence or attempt a response.
"I can't wait for the day he lets me kill you, Henry."
I finally threw her a smirk. "Little girl, you don't have the chops. Run along and tell your master I'll be there....when I get there."
"I serve him willingly but that doesn't make him my master."
"Oh? He was just saying the other day you were the prize bitch in his kennel. My mistake then."
I heard her hiss, the scrape of her shoes over the stone floor as she stalked off and I smiled. I had to take these small moments of fun where I could.
Glancing down at the cellphone I'd kept hidden from her, I read Alice's message once more.
{Henry, I've sent you a million messages. If you don't respond soon, I WILL come to Volterra. I am NOT joking.}
That couldn't happen.
Ever.
Sighing, I sent a response. Enough to let her know I was alive. One word that held all the love I had for her in it, I hope she knew that.
One word. Just one.
{No.}
"I have no idea what you did to piss off the kewpie doll, Henry but I am not thanking you for it. Aro says to attend him. Now. He won't ask again."
Rolling my eyes, carefully hiding the phone in a swift sleight of hand, I turned to nod at Renata. Unlike the others, she seemed an a
right. "Duly noted."
Then I followed her out to see what new punishments my brother had devised for me.-
