Bella sat by the fire looking into the flames, remembering times she'd spend with Edward. Not so good memories of him saving her and risking it all on her. She looked at the sleeping Nessie (she was getting used to the name) in her arms and thought about how it almost never came to this. Every hour had led to this moment, and now she wondered what the future held.
**FLASHBACK***
James had challenged Edward. It was now going to be a game. He saw Edward's interest and need to protect Bella, his "pet" as they often referred to humans who were kept around for amusing purposes. But she...was more than that. He crouched defensively in front of her guarding her with his life. Snarling ripping from his throat and out his slightly parted lips as he clenched teeth to show he was not backing down. After narrowly escaping the scene, she sat there as he drove. "I have to tell Charlie." Edward wanted to get her out of the state without stopping at her home. She was determined to perservere throught this, and she'd do it on her own terms. "BRING ME HOME!" She yelled as he frantically drove through the narrow, winding curves of the highway in Forks.
With little time to devise a plan she rushed in, seeming it to be a breakup. Charlie, only concerned tried to help and make her feel better. He didn't want to lose her. Running up to her room to gather clothes and supplies not knowing how long she'd be gone or where she was going for that matter. She held back silent tears as she thought of hurtful things to say to him so he wouldn't follow. Bella could not fathom hurting her father this way, but if he knew....his life was in danger with her being here. As she approached the door, she turned and forced the harsh words from her mouth. "NO! I have to leave, I have to go home. If I don't leave now...I'll just be stuck here like mom." With that she quickly turned and walked out of the house. Her heart aching at what she had just done to her father.
As she drove down the highway heading out of town, thoughts swam through her head as she felt remorseful over what she had to do to keep Charlie safe. He'd never forgive her. "Move over." His melodic voice rung out in the softest of tones. She gasped and clutched her heart as she did as she was told and looked out the window at the passing trees and businesses. "Charlie will forgive you..." He said into the silent night. It was almost as if he read her mind. But it wasn't possible, due to her glitch in her brain. He looked at her with reassuring eyes as she scooted closer to him.
Alice had another vision--as she drew the image in her head, Bella looked on waiting for a strike of recognition. "My old ballet studio?" She asked absentmindedly. "You've been here before?" Suddenly all their butterscotch golden eyes were staring in her direction in bemusement as though she'd said something important. "Yes, I danced there as a kid." They looked to each other as if it were the key to the answers. Jasper looked focused, most likely calming Bella's nerves as she felt a sense of calm. Her cell rang as she went into the next room to answer it.
Violent delights, have violent ends. It was a noble way to die, she told herself. Dying in the place of someone you loved. It had to count towards something. She hung up her cell and snuck downstairs to the Phoenix hotel lobby. Jasper and Alice distracted by checking out, she quickly made a decision so that it wouldn't be seen in her visions. As she drove to the studio, mace in hand she said silent prayers. She was doing the right thing. To no avail, she continued to fight. He tortured her, it was his game. All to antagonize Edward. She lay on the floor holding her bleeding leg, feeling as if it were broken. Numbness shot through her leg after she felt the sharpest pain and crack. Removing the shard from her leg as the blood ran down, covering her torn jeans and floor. "Well, I suppose we should get on with it. And then I can call your friends and tell them where to find you, and my little message." He said with a sardistic smile across his lips. James spread his mouth wide and bite down on her right wrist.
The pain rushed her like millions of fire ants in her veins. She could feel the heat begin to scorch its way through her system. Her vision hazy as she watched them destroy James in the fire. Pain...extreme pain and burning. Her leg bleeding out and broken. She felt as though she couldn't move, but the venom working through her body made her tense and release with no power to control it. She screamed out in agony as she clenched her teeth to muffle her pain. She could feel the venom ripping through her veins, burning her like molten lava. She could hear the muffled conversations between Carlisle, Alice and Edward. "What if I can't stop?" He never trusted himself fully with her. Now was the ultimate test, or the ultimate sacrifice. "You're running out of time." Carlisle urged him to do it or let her be changed. Edward didn't want this for her. She had a beautiful soul and he could not doom her to this life. As she became weaker, the pain intensifying as she clenched her nails into her palm, breaking the skin and bending nails to uncomfortable positions. Another surge of pain as Edward began to suck venom from her bloodstream. It burned like fire as he pulled and puckered his lips so his venom stayed off of her. Bella began to remember the time he'd saved her from the sliding, out of control van. Stopping its tracks with just his hand. That was the day she knew...Edward was something different. The time in the meadow when all things were right and at peace. The way he kissed her, held her and smiled at her. His lullaby wafting in her ears, remembering the piece he'd played for her naming it hers. Many a time it had put her to sleep when she just couldn't relax. His presence and hum would be all she needed to feel like home.
It was true that your life flashed before your eyes before you die, she thought to herself as she went in and out of consciousness.
Her eyes fluttered open as the light made her flinch at its brightness. She looked around for Edward and found her mother. She explained how Edward hadn't left her side and was asleep. Edward didn't sleep. As she listened to her mother's explanation of what had happened to her (told by Edward) she imagined it happening like that, but it didn't. Far from it. After she left the room, he looked pained. Struggling with a decision. He began to explain that James had been destroyed. Victoria ran off and they were searching for her. "Bella, you have to go to Jackson..you have to go so I can't hurt you anymore." She looked at him as her world felt as if it were collapsing. "N-N-NO! No! I won't I can't! I..I...I don't...what are you talking about?! We can't be apart. You can't leave me."
***PRESENT DAY***
Bella looked down at her wrist and ran a finger over where her scar used to be. It was now just a memory of that hot May night when he bit her. Now that James was no longer a threat, nor was any vampire for that matter, she was able to finally shine and be the person she always aspired to be. She was born to be a vampire.
