Picking up the Mother's Day card I received from Bella, I reread it. I kept the envelope - there was no postmark. Strange. She and Edward included a very generous gift card to one of my favorite stores.
I greatly appreciated the gesture, but longed to hear my daughter's voice. I still haven't heard from her.
I debated calling Charlie, but decided against it. He'd just think I was being neurotic again.
Taking a deep breath, I picked up the phone and dialed Bella's cell number again.
Listening to the ring, and waiting for her voice mail to pick up, I was momentarily shocked when I heard Bella's soft voice answer.
"Bella - is that you?"

Bella could only avoid her mother for so long. Mother's Day had passed and it killed her not to call and talk to her, hear her voice again. Edward and Renesmee had done everything possible to keep her distracted that day, but still in the back of her mind she missed her mom. Wished she could just be honest with her but her safety meant more to her than anything. It was a sacrifice she had to make.
Renee didn't know they had left Forks, she made Charlie swear it. Her phone rang at 1:38 a.m. and she looked at the screen seeing her mom's number. If she didn't answer, she'd only continue calling or freak out and go to Charlie. Closing her eyes, she tried to keep her voice normal and not so musical as it had been since she'd been turned.
"Mom...hey. Yes, it's me." She smiled, hearing her mother's soft sigh of relief.

"Oh Bella!! It's so good to hear your voice. I've missed you so much! I was worried about you. Why haven't you called? How's Edward and Nessie? How are Carlisle and Esme, and Jacob, and everyone else? Sorry - I'm rambling again, but I have so many questions - it's been too long since we've talked young lady! You shouldn't worry your mother like that. How's the weather there in Forks?"
I knew I was prattling on like an old woman, but the words came out in a rush. I had missed her so very much, and couldn't wait to catch up on everything going on with her.

She chuckled and listened to her mother's rambles, it was so great to hear her voice again. "Everyone is great, really great. I'm sorry I haven't called. Edward took Renesmee and I on a trip to see Paris. You know Spring vacation and all. It was last minute and I didn't want to worry you. It's beautiful here." She smiled and looked down at her leg where she had the photo album of her wedding.
"How's Phil? And you? How was your Mother's Day, sorry I didn't call."

Paris? Bella's in Paris? And she didn't let me know she was going? Frowning, I quickly mull over this information. I have to let go - she's a grown woman now. Married, with a family. She doesn't have to check in with either me or Charlie anymore. Hmm... Charlie. Surely she told him she was leaving for Paris? Feeling slightly hurt, I brightened at the thought of all the sights she was getting to see, and wistfully regretting that I had never been able to take her to those places.
"Oh honey! Paris! How wonderful for all of you. You'll have to send me pictures! I always wanted to see Paris. How long will you be staying? Phil and I are fine. Spring training is over with, and his leg is fine, so he's going to get some game time in. We always look forward to that. Mother's Day was fine. Thank you so very much for the gift card. It was quite generous of you both. I understand now why you didn't call. I would forget to call too if I were in Paris! That would have made for a fantastic Mother's Day for you, sweetheart."
I realized I was talking so fast, I had forgotten to take a breath. Giggling a little, I paused to let her respond. It was just so good to hear her voice.

She listened to Renee speak about Paris and Phil, glad to hear his leg was doing better. Phil always seemed to get hurt, but in his line of work being a professional baseball player it was something that was almost expected. Hearing her mother laugh made her smile.
"I promise I'll send some pictures. It's more than I ever thought it would be. Tell Phil I said hi and good luck next season. I didn't know what to get you so Edward suggested the gift card. I miss you Mom, just know that."
She sighed softly and wished she could hug her again, but being near her always brought up too many risks.

"Oh honey, I miss you too. We'll have to plan to get together sometime soon - perhaps after baseball season. I'm so glad I got to talk to you. I was considering calling your father. You know how that would have ended up!" Giggling at the thought of Charlie rolling his eyes at hearing my voice on the other end of the phone line....
"Oh my goodness! I just thought about the time difference! It has to be the middle of the night there in Paris! I'm so sorry baby. I won't keep you so that you can go back to sleep. I was just getting a little worried about you. Enjoy Paris - send pictures, and call me when you get back to Forks, ok? I love you sweetheart. Please give my love to Edward and Nessie as well."

Telling Renee she didn't need to sleep would be a bad idea, but the thought of it made her smile. Charlie had taken her new 'status' hard, but in the end he accepted what was and tried to understand it. Renee was a different character all together than Charlie. She wouldn't understand quite as easily and if the Volturi knew Charlie knew about their world, his life would be in danger. She couldn't do that to her mother too. Charlie finding out was taken out of her hands by fate, this time she wouldn't allow anyone else to suffer for the choices she made.
She chuckled and shook her head. "We all know how Charlie is on the phone, he hates it." She smiled and faked a yawn. "I was awake and reading, you didn't wake me. I love you mom, please take care and I'll....I'll try to see you soon okay?" Renee always did want to travel, maybe she'd talk to Edward about sending Renee plane tickets to Paris....after they left of course.

"Ok sweetheart. I'm glad I didn't wake you. It is so good to talk to you. Have a good time, and enjoy the sights. Can't wait to see you, so hopefully we can arrange something sometime soon honey. Take care of yourself, and give my love to everyone. Don't wait too long to call next time. I love you - Bye."
Hanging up the phone, I stared at it for a moment. Paris. Wow - I would so love to see Paris. I'm so glad that Edward has the means to do things like this for her. Smiling, I put the cell phone back on the counter, and went back to the kitchen to see what I could throw together for dinner when Phil gets home.
