“For everyone else, the pain of transformation is the sharpest memory they have of their human life. I remember nothing of being human…”
My eyes snapped open in the darkness, nothing but shadows surrounded me, bearing down on me like a heavy, oppressive blanket and yet I felt far more alive…far more free, than I ever had before. And I couldn’t explain how or why I just knew that because the fact was that apart from my name and other basic things, I remembered nothing before this moment.
My name was Mary Alice. And that was all I could recall. Not where I was or how I’d gotten there. I just knew that I’d been..reborn. In the strangest way.
I struggled, feeling out with my hands in the small, cramped place I was curled up in, fingers clawing through a type of granite barrier very easily, crumbling it into dust with my touch. I burrowed through, pushing my small body through and tumbled out onto a hard, dirty floor with only the barest flicker of a gaslamp to light the way. Looking around, my brain registered how the motes were dancing in the orange glow, twirling and tapping in the otherwise stagnant air. The stench of decay was overwhelming and I took in a huge gagging breath only to realize the oddest thing. Until that one moment, I hadn’t been breathing at all. Quick flashes ran through my head of a tall man, pale and magnificent. He was holding me, taking me…somewhere. Then…nothing.
A sound caught my attention and the sharp twisting motion of my head should have had it breaking but it didn’t. There in the arched doorway was a rather handsome young man, blonde haired, his eyes burning like crimson flames. He was leaning casually, watching me as a predator watched its prey, lifting his slightly crooked nose to sniff the air before settling his devil’s eyes on me again.
“Damn. Too late. That’s a shame.” His voice was smooth, wicked and dark.
“Where am I? Who are you?” Surprising how fluid and musical my own voice sounded, like the song of angels and I became distracted, repeating the same two questions over and over just to hear that sweet pitched song echo around us in this deserted chamber.
He rolled his eyes, holding up a hand to cut me off after the 8th repetition. “Enough. I forgot how annoying newborns can be.”
Newborns? What was he talking about? I inched a step back. Something about his demeanor was threatening, his poise and his carriage. I hissed, surprising myself and before I could even finish the thought, I struck out, leaping across the space separating us but met with nothing. He was gone, a rush of wind slapping back to hit me in the face. His voice floated back. “Going to be interesting to see what you do now. I’ll be keeping an eye on you. But tell you what, I’ll give you a head start.”
I stepped through the doorway he’d disappeared from and looked out into …a cemetery. Inky night surrounded me on all sides, the eerie hoot of an owl nearby. I gagged again, catching the wafting scent of something…delicious. Something that set my senses on fire and my throat to burning with a raspy pain…
That was the night I met James for the first time. But not the last.
That was the night I was reborn into my new life of vampirism.
I was alone. And I was hungry. And I had no one to show me what to do, so I did what my instincts were screaming to do. I followed that mysterious aroma to its source.
A human male.
He tasted divine.
