It was a blustery cold evening as I left the Christmas Eve gathering at the Blacks’ home. –smirking as I was walking to my car thinking- It’s a good thing I’m warm blooded –giggling as I hopped in.- I popped in the CD Jacob just had to buy me as Christmas present. I wasn’t sure if it was just his good nature or if he wanted to me to be embarrassed as I opened it in front of everyone. He knew that I don’t like being the center of attention. I wasn’t even told to bring any gifts to exchange but it WAS nice to have someone think of me for a change.
I took my time driving home so I could listen to the new CD by the artist’s I secretly liked. Jacob always did know what I liked. Humming along to one of the songs as I came to a dead-end street. How did I get here, I thought to myself. I was so wrapped up in the music that I ended up somewhere that I had never been. I figured if I turned around and went back the other way, I could easily find my way back to where I came from. I lowered the music as I turned my car around and headed in the opposite direction, paying attention to the road to see if I recognized any of the area but couldn’t. It was so dark and dreary, yet peaceful and quiet. Suddenly something huge shot out across my path. Not sure what it was, I stopped. I beamed my headlights on high looking around to see if I could figure out what it was. I didn’t see anything and thought maybe it could have been an animal. I started off again, this time slower than before. Creeping my way back the way I came, I noticed something was odd on the right shoulder of the road moving in one spot. I pulled up behind it, still not sure what it was until it moved again and I realized it was an animal with a lot of fur. I jumped out of my car and realized what it was. It was a wolf! Not just any wolf, but a wolf like me. I didn’t recognize the scent so I knew it wasn’t anyone I knew. How could this be? Are there others out there beyond La Push? I hesitated as I drew closer. I wasn’t sure if he or she was hurt or if it was a plan of attack, so I shifted into my wolf form to communicate.
Standing in the middle of the road, snorting as I was pacing side to side in hesitation. –ML- Are you okay?, I asked. No response. Still pacing, not sure whether to go up and check on him or her since I didn’t know who I was up against. –Still pacing- again I asked, ARE YOU OKAY?, as I became irritated. I stopped in my tracks as I heard a faint whisper reply, “Help me!” I knew the wolf was injured then, so I quickly leaped over to the side of the road to use my snout to try and lift his or her head as I asked, “Can you shift into human form? “ Again, I heard a reply. “I think so!” The voice sounded as if a young female or a child. I then shifted back into human form as the other wolf was shifting then I realized IT WAS a child. A little girl about the age of 10. I was confused, being so young and becoming one of us?! I knew that had to be hard to take in, but I knew I didn’t have time to ask questions. I quickly scooped her up in my arms and put her in my car. I sped away as fast as I could to head back to Billy Black’s home. I knew he could help and maybe answer some questions too.
