Alice walked outside where I was sitting in anticipation, waiting for Bella to finish the transformation. I could hear that it was finally coming to an end before Alice had reached where I was seated. She was smiling and her eyes were wide with excitement. I love when she gets this animated/excited about things, but this was too concerning for me to join in on her mood. I threw up my guards as soon as the transformation started, knowing that newborns can't control themselves. Alice grabbed my hand and started jumping up and down and I couldn't help but smile at her. I wrapped my arms around her and kissed the top of her head and sighed. "Oh, Jasper, you worry too much. Everything is going to be just fine", she said, tapping her temple and laughing. "I'm glad you think so" I reply. She laughs at me and says, "I know so." I bring her face up to meet mine and kiss her deeply and passionately. She steps back and grabs my hand to lead me up into the house and up the stairs to the bedroom where Bella had been the past two days. We walked into the room as soon as Bella was opening her eyes. I tensed up immediately and stepped in front of Alice, as Carlisle and Emmett do the same, and we take our stand to protect the others. We are all prepared for whatever may happen as we watch with anticipation. I can immediately sense Bella's awe and confusion as she blinks and looks up at the ceiling. Bella's mood shifts suddenly, causing me to shift into a defensive stance. She blinks up at Edward and almost instantly her mood shifts again to amazement and my mind starts racing. I didn't even have to help her change her mood, she did it on her own and this didn't make sense to me at all. She was able to switch out of anger and violent way too quickly and I was completely taken aback by it. I started paying closer attention to her mood as she reached up to touch Edward's face. I backed off when they started kissing. Emmett starts to laugh and clear his throat, as they cool it off some. So I expand my sense again only to still feel the sexual vibes coming from them and I step back closer to Alice. Amazed again at how fast she changes her mood, I start questioning my "talent" and everything I've known, but quickly shake my head to clear those thoughts. This could just be a coincidence. Edward and Bella leave to go on her first hunt and I go downstairs, with Alice following me and her telling me "I told you so." I just shake my head and Alice can see my confusion. "She has had time to prepare herself for this, that will help a lot with all of this," she explains. "It still doesn't make sense to me Alice," I reply to her, sighing. I head out the front door and sit down on the porch steps and put my head in my hands. I can sense Alice behind me, as she bends down to kiss my head and turns to walk back into the house, leaving me to think this through. I just don't understand this. Something isn't right, I keep telling myself. Maybe it was just luck? She won't be able to do it again and I know it.
Bella and Edward return home later that evening and Edward recounts the events of the trip. Bella stopped mid-hunt? I ask myself inwardly. Edward turns toward me and nods at me with wide eyes. This just causes my head to feel like its spinning in circles. Bella is starting to feel anxious as she is making her way to Nessie and I eye her very carefully. I am standing in front of her as she is getting closer and suddenly she is switched again to a feeling of awe and happiness as Nessie is cradled in her arms. I relax, but not completely because I know she can lose it at any moment. None of us fully trust her and I can feel everyone's anxiety and Jacob is feeling very angry and confused.
Nessie is in Bella's arms a few days later, after the calm of her attacking Jacob and we are all settling into the new sway of things. I am sitting on the couch reading, when suddenly Edward is on his feet and flashing over to grab Renesmee from Bella and I am already holding Bella's arms behind her back. Bella is completely confused and is just staring at Edward as he is guarding Renesmee. Shocked, Bella asks, "what happened?" "She was telling you about wanting blood instead of formula and her cravings for it," exclaims Edward. "So and what's your point?" Bella asks. Edward's mood shifts instantly to calm and love as he shakes his head and smiles. "I over reacted, I'm so sorry love." He replies and nods at me. I immediately let Bella's hands go and feel everything return to a normal calm. Things aren't making sense with Bella and her control and I feel as if I'm losing my touch on reality. I take off out the back door, ignoring the wolf girl, Leah, as I continue into the woods. Not really sure where I'm going, but knowing I need to be alone to think and figure out what is wrong with all of this. I'm definitely questioning everything I've known for all these years and if it's possible for a newborn, who has had time to prepare, could be able to do as well as Bella is doing. I just can't take anymore and I take off even faster, just letting my instincts take over as I leap across the river and head north into oblivion.
