*Sitting on the couch in the living room, I watched Rose playing with Ryder on the floor in front of the back windows. I started laughing and I was suddenly transported back through the years. I was watching as Maria turned a very young boy, probably about 16 years of age. I was never very happy with who she picked to be a part of the army and I was never happy with why she picked them. This boy was of medium build and was handsome in his own way. I knew instantly that he would not fit in at all, but I held my tongue, knowing it would only start a fight with Maria. I started the usual training with him and he caught on quickly, but there was something off about him and I liked that. He was different and it was starting to grow on me as the days passed by. We would go on walks and he would tell me about his life and all that he had done and seen. I would tell him about my human life and what I've done since becoming a vampire. About six months into his new life, I realized what had made me attach myself to him so quickly. He reminded me of a brother, a human brother I had spent time with when I was young. I knew it couldn't be him, but it still got me thinking. I never said anything to him and kept on trying to be with him, training or such as much as I could without seeming to be too obvious. I didn't want Maria suspecting anything or knowing I had "strong feelings" about this particular boy. One day, after a battle with another army, we were sitting up in a tree talking about everything. He mentioned his grandfather telling him a story about how his dad's uncle was in the army in the war. I immediately stiffened and relaxed, not wanting him to notice. His grandfather always told the story about how his uncle had gone missing in action during the war and they never found him. I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I mean, it couldn't be true, right? I asked questions about the story. His grandfather never gave much information, having not been told much himself. I laughed, a small, bitter laugh and he looked up at me. He tilted his head and I stopped laughing instantly. I noticed his mood switch and I knew he was trying to make sense of it in his head. He shook his head and kept saying "No, no, no. It can't be". I didn't know what to say, I just sat there completely still. He jumped off the branch and took off running towards the forest. I didn't see him again for a few days and by then I knew what was going to happen. His year was coming to an end and I knew what Maria would want. I sought him out and found him amongst a few of the others. He started to walk away from me, I caught him up and dragged him outside. I told him to leave, to run, to never look back. He looked confused and started to say something. I put my hand up to his mouth and mouthed for him to be quiet. I told him to run because if he didn't, I would have to kill him and I could not do that. I would get myself killed before I let anything happen to him. He sat there, staring at me and I calmed him down and told him again to leave and keep running. He nodded and took off. Later that night, Maria noticed and went on a rampage. It was then, that I decided I needed to leave her and I started my planning on doing just that. "JASPER!!" Rose yelled at me, bringing me back to the here and now. *Laughing, I glance up at her. "Yes?" "Do you want to take Ryder outside to play for a little while?" Rose replied. "Sure, let's go!" I jumped off the couch and headed outside.
