I was laying in bed when the smell of bacon and eggs hit my nose. I get up and dressed myself, I was used to doing it alone these passed couple of years. I get into my wheel chair and roll myself into the kitchen. "Morning daddy", Rachel greeted me with a hug and a kiss. Daddy, there is bacon, eggs, toast and coffee. She serves me and then she told me she was going to Paul's house.
I ate my breakfast with a smile. I loved when Rachel cooked, she was like her mom--a wonderful cook. "Daddy, I'm leaving now. It's cold outside, so I will be bringing a jacket. Love you, see you later." She said as she walked out the door. I finished my breakfast and wheeled myself to the curtain and open them. It was snowing.
I drank my coffee and watched the snow fall. I thought back to the day my whole life changed. I remember it like it was yesterday. Rachel was nine years old, watching cartoons. Jake was five playing with the train set his mom bought for him. My wife and I were going see a movie. Sue Clearwater had agreed to watch the kids for us while we went to Seattle for dinner and a movie.
I went upstairs to see if Yvette was ready. She was wearing a light green turtle neck sweater and blue jeans. The green of the sweater off set her hazel colored eyes. She was so beautiful, she took my breath away. The door bell rang as Yvette and I made our way down stairs to answer the door. It was Sue. "Hello Sue, thank you so much for watching the kids for us. Jake's bedtime is 8 and Rachel's is 9. Are you ready, my dear?" I asked my wife as I kissed her. She nodded with the smile I loved seeing. We walked out the door, little did I know that would be the beginning of a tragic event that would alter my life forever.
I opened the car door for Yvette. As she got in I closed the door and went around and got in the drivers side. The snow was coming down pretty hard. I started the car and let it warm up. After about a minute or two, we drove off. I took the short cut to the movies. Yvette and I where joking and laughing as she told the funniest jokes. Suddenly, a deer ran across the road I swerved in time to miss it, but hit a patch of black ice that covered the highway. I lost control of the family car and flipped at least 3 times before hitting a tree. Shards of glass and metal went flying everywhere before everything stopped and the world was silent.
I woke up and found that I was hanging upside down by my seat belt. "Yvette!!!" I called out but no answer. I looked over to see her eyes closed and could not tell if she was breathing. I could taste the metallic taste of blood in my mouth. I put my hand to my face. My head and nose where bleeding. I could hear sirens in the distance and I could see flashing lights approaching us. Everything went black as I said a silent prayer to our Quilete Ancestors.
When I woke up there were doctors and nurses all around me. I could feel them sticking IV's in my arm then once again I saw blackness as I lost conscienceness again.
Blinking my eyes open as the pain shot through my body I found myself in a hospital room as I looked around. "Mr. Black?" I heard a voice say to my left. His coat read Dr.Cullen. "Yvette?!? Yvette?" I began to call out, before turning to face the doctor. "Doc how is my wife? Where is she?"
"Slow down Mr. Black. Calm down, listen to me. Your wife sustain tremendous injuries. We tried everything we could but she suffered from a severe hemorrhage on her brain. I'm so sorry, Mr. Black, but your wife did not make it." Those words hit me like knives. I put my face into my hands and began to cry hard.
The days following I began to notice I could not move or feel my legs. I finally got the nerve to ask the nurse what had happened to them. "Why can't I feel my legs?" She looked so apologetic as she said, "Well Mr. Black, due to the accident, it left you paralized from the waist down. Your spinal cord was injured and Dr. Cullen was unable to repair it."
I could not say anything. First I lost my wife and the kids had lost their mom. Now I would never walk again, or run with my children. Not being able to walk would not stop me from being a wonderful father to my kids. They needed me now more than ever.
"Daddy I'm home." I shook my head clear of the thoughts as Rachel and Paul entered the house. I gave Rachel a kiss and a hug and smiled..she looked just like her mom. "I love you sweet heart." I said as I hugged her. I would always cherish what I did have, and the memories of Yvette and I would forever be in my heart. But some days, I can't help but blaming myself.
