Aro smiled across the table to Santigo.
“I am sure that you have had extensive description and explanation of the standard process by now, but I was wondering if you had any specific questions relating to the way we bestow the gifts of the Volturi…”
“Yes, Mister Aro, your people have been most helpful these last several years, and most patient while I thought about what you have offered me. It is understandably a very big choice and one I did not want to hurry into. I hope that my consideration and hesitation at times has not been too hard a burden on those that have been so helpful in teaching me.”
Aro chuckled softly, “There were a few times in the beginning when things were a bit trying for some who were assigned to teach you, but you have been a quick study. Between that and your most interesting gift…”
Santigo smiled softly, “Yes, Mister Aro, and speaking of the gift you find interesting; the lovely lady you have training me thought you might perhaps want an example of what my gift truly can do at this point. I fully understand that it will be enhanced in some way at such a time as I accept the Volturi’s assistance.”
“Oh my, that would be entertaining… What to use as the example though. I have a thought on it. There is a young lady who lives with a friend of mine who can see decisions and choices. Perhaps we could see what your masking ability can do with that.”
“Of course, Mister Aro, what did you have in mind?”
“Nothing too taxing, of course. I am going to write down an idea on a slip of paper. Feel free to embellish it as you see fit. I am simply curious what the young lady will make of what she sees. I have a few very subtle friends that are keeping an eye on things out where they are. They can let us know what transpires.”
Aro motions to a servant in the corner and is brought a small metal box as well as paper and pen. Aro writes down his idea on the paper and then quietly opens the box with a smirk. He lists out a small silver coil woven with short red hair.
“My dear friend Santigo, perhaps this little trinket will help you focus on the young lady’s gifts. It took years of very careful timing and skill to collect enough hair for this locket. Please let me know when you are ready to proceed and we will see what happens…”
“Of course, Mister Aro…”
“Those to get back to the matter at hand, I wanted to explain to you that we are a bit more civilized in the way we go about things with bringing in the change. We are, for lack of a better term, absolutely clinical about it. Rather than having some random vampire drain the body, we instead perform the process in a sterile environment with the appropriate medical tools. The preparation for this process is the patient gathering of the venom from an appropriately aged vampire within the Volturi. The venom is introduced throughout the body by a series of injections into the muscle mass as the blood is being drained. Rather than the hit or miss tactics used by some of the more uncivilized vampires, we have a success rate of 98%.
So you see, my friend, there is very little to worry about. The Volturi will cover all the bases. We have invested far too much time and money into developing your gifts to simply throw it all away as this frail human body of yours slowly rots away with you still breathing in it.”
