The wind was blowing and leaves were falling; it was a cool October afternoon. I had been sitting in the corner of my bedroom near my window pane, staring at the driveway - wiping the tears away from my face as each one fell- hoping I would see Sam walking up the driveway towards the house. He had been gone for almost two weeks and no one seems to know where he went. My mind kept questioning, was he hurt? Kidnapped?, or possibly even… I squealed out, ”No!, No!, No!” -shaking my head back and forth while the tears fell forcefully-. I couldn’t bear to think it, much less say it. In the three years Sam and I had been together, he had never left my side. We told each other everything. There wasn’t a day that went by without a phone call or just his mere presence at my door step. Then all of a sudden, it just all stopped. I thought, what did I do wrong?
Fighting the tears back, I heard my dad call my name. “Leah, come here!” I stood up and wiped my face with both hands trying to gain my composure so dad wouldn’t see me like this. I replied, “be right there, dad!”while looking in the mirror at my swollen eyes and red nose. I slowly walked into the living room where he was at. I tried not to look in his eyes, scared he would notice that I had been crying. He asked, “are you going to the school dance on the reservation tonight?” All of a sudden the tears began to fall again. Just then, I remembered a few days before Sam disappeared, he promised to take me to the dance. I quickly tried wiping the tears away but the more I wiped the more they would fall, so I ran into my bedroom and slammed my door shut, locking it behind me. I heard a light thump hit the floor. It was the dress Sam bought me to wear to the dance. I didn’t realize it was hanging up on the back of my bedroom door. I bent down to pick the dress up as the tears were still flowing from my face. I shook it to make sure it didn’t get dirty. Out of the corner of my swollen wet eyes, I noticed something white and thin floating in the air, slowly side to side on the way down to the floor. I grabbed it in mid air before hitting the floor. I opened my hand and noticed it was a small piece of paper with my name on it. I opened it to see what it said, looking first at who wrote it. It was from Sam. “SAM!” I yelled. Quickly remembering he was gone. More tears fell as I read,
“My lovely Leah,
You are my life, my everything and I want you to be with me always. I will wait for you at the water’s edge the night of the dance. I can’t wait to see you in your dress.
Love always,
Your Sam”
I couldn’t hold back my emotions and the tears flowed evermore freely. I fell to the floor, grasping the note in one hand and the dress in the other, clinching them tightly while crying harder then I had ever cried in my entire life. Then it hit me. I thought to myself, maybe there is a possibility that Sam would be waiting on me at the water’s edge tonight before the dance? Excitedly, I jumped up, threw the dress Sam had bought me on the end of the bed, placed the note on my desk and hurried to the bathroom to get myself ready. I heard a knock on the bedroom door. It was dad. He asked, “Is everything okay, Leah?”Yelling from the bathroom, I replied,“Yes!, dad. I’m getting ready for the dance tonight. Can I borrow your truck?” Without hesitation, dad quickly answered back, “Yes, It’s all yours. Have a great time.”
I made it to the reservation with just enough time to go to the water’s edge before the dance started. I took my silver flats off my feet so the sand wouldn’t get in my shoes. It felt good to feel the sand between my toes and water inching its way inland to my feet. I had been locked up in my bedroom for what seemed like years. I had forgotten the joys and wonders of the outside world. Walking along the water’s edge, I quietly yelled, “Where are you, Sam?”over and over as I paced back and forth hoping to hear a reply. It was almost time for the dance to start.I kept repeating over and over “Please, Sam….please, come back to me.” Just then, I heard a noise on the distance. It sounded as if someone was calling my name. I heard it again.“Leah!” Looking around to see who was calling out to me but it was too dark to see who it was. “LEAH!” I heard my name louder, this time it sounded as if someone was only a few feet behind me. I quickly turned around and it was Sam. “SAM! SAM!”, before I knew it, I was yelling in Sam’s ear as I throw my arms around his neck, leaping into his arms. I couldn’t believe he was right in front of me. I had to pull my arms back to caress his face with my hands just to make sure he was real, that he was actually in front of me and not just my imagination playing tricks on me. He seemed happy to see me but something just didn’t feel right.
