Aro smiled as Demetri walked into the Council chamber, and he did not enter alone. Aro looked carefully at the young man that walked just behind the Tracker. Aro watched them both and waited patiently with a whimsical smile on his face.
“Demetri, my old friend and loyal tracker, you been gone a long time. Have you brought me a present? Or is this simply some pet you picked up during your journey?”
“Master Aro, I believe I have found what you sought. The one who stands behind me has the talent you sought out. I would be clearer about my meaning but precautions, for the time, must be taken. He is known by the name Santigo. His particular talent apparently had advantages in more ways than we expected as he was very difficult to track.”
“Well then… We must welcome him properly.”
Aro clapped his hands and several attendants ran into the room; he gestured to the newcomer and they scurried away to wash and pamper him.
“Demetri, I have a new task for you if you are ready.”
“I live to serve the Volturi, Master Aro. What would you have me do?”
“Nothing so dramatic, my loyal friend. I want you to pick from the Guard sixteen who are the most subtle, the most efficient, the most intelligent. Send them to gather information on all families that we have being watched. I leave it to you to decide who you send where, but make sure they are not seen and make sure that they are aware of the Wolves as well. I simply want to check on a few things and a general census will work as well as any other method.”
“I swear it shall be done, Master Aro. I will not fail the Volturi in this endeavor or any other.”
Demetri bowed respectfully before turning and exiting the chamber. Aro was very pleased with how things are progressing and hummed a whimsical little tune while he waited for Santigo to be ready. If his talents were anywhere near what Demetri believed them to be, this could be a very fruitful venture.
