Aro was watching the fountains when he heard a small quiet ring for one of the pouches at his side. Smiling smugly, he pulled out the small satellite phone and punched in the passcode. With amusement he lifted it to speak.
“Well little Sonia, I see my package arrived intact and ended up in the proper hands. I’m sorry for the subterfuge but there are those we needed to avoid alerting to your task. Have you anything of interest to tell us about?”
“Yes, Master Aro. Something of great importance, I think. If I understand what has transpired, the young Bride’s human relatives have been told of her true nature and that of the Cullen coven.”
Aro looked at the phone as if it was a snake that just struck his wrist. Surely Carlisle would not have been foolish enough to allow something so stupid to happen. Not after what happened with Bella’s progeny already.
“Sonia, you must be absolutely certain of what you saw. There can be no doubt to these facts, or we dare not show our hand this early in the game. I am impressed with your skills, Sonia. Not many could have gotten so close as quickly as you have. And perhaps from what you have been telling me is good that you have.”
“Thank you, Master Aro. Your praise is like soft rain on a hot day...”
Aro rolled his eyes silently as he waited for Sonia to continue her report.
“I’m working on making my way through the woods back toward Seattle now, and will report to you again when I… I hear something… It sounds big…”
Arrow winced when he heard the growl of the Wolves and the shrill scream from Sonia before the phone was shattered and went dead. Aro sighed and closed the phone, then tossed it out the window into the river below the castle.
“Such a pity. She showed such potential for the future, but apparently had no foresight to protect her trail while in unfriendly territory. Perhaps she was not as smart as she believed herself to be,” he smiled and hummed a whimsical tune as he headed back to the Council chambers to let the others know what had been reported to him.
