Aro strode into the Council chamber where the two he had handpicked of the Guard awaited him. Smiling at their attentiveness and the obvious nervousness that the summons had created, he spoke quietly to put them at ease.
“Demitri, my old friend, I have a very special task for you. I would like you to seek out a collection of rumors and see if there is any truth to them. I may simply be sending you on a fool’s errand but the stories, if true, bear merit. You will be going to London, the Whitechapel quarter, to seek out the anomaly. The folder on the table over there has the rest of the details that are known and a copy of all tales that are being told. Seek at the source of the stories and if there is any fruit to the labor, feel free to bring back evidence of it or bring back the source itself.”
As Demitri left, he picked up the folder from the table by the door without opening it. Aro smiled at the confidence that the young vampire showed. His tracking skills are second to none and Aro had no doubts that Demitri would succeed where others may have failed. He now turned his attention to the second of his handpicked Guard members. Looking over her carefully, he could see her clearly but she seemed somehow half there. The young vampire’s gift, to be overlooked, was an unusual one but she should prove quite useful as an observer.
“Sonia, for the time being I have a simple task for you. I would like you to go to Seattle to our friends there and simply check in with them to see of anything of importance has been happening. You will not go outside the bounds of your orders without specific direction from the Volturi Council. You are still young and while you were witness to a grand conflict in Forks, I am not sure you realize how powerful some of our kindred are. Do you understand what you are to do?”
The young vampire knelt as Aro spoke, looking up only when he stoped, “I understand fully Master Aro. I will not disappoint you in this task and I will stay within the guidelines you have set. Unless I hear specifically from the Volturi Council, I will not leave Seattle. I appreciate the chance to serve the Volturi, Master Aro. When shall I leave, if I can be so bold to ask?”
“It is of no major concern so you may set your timetable as you wish. I would like to receive your first report within the next week or so, so please arrange your schedule accordingly. There is a small package in the foyer to be taken with you to Seattle. A few delicacies that can only be found here for friends in Seattle. You may go now, Sonia,” Aro dismissed her with a gesture of his hand.
Aro turned his back on the young vampire as he walked across the room to a glass chessboard. Smiling, he moved a pawn forward to a new space. Circling the board, he again moved a pawn into a new placement on the board. Smiling to himself, he walked from the room toward his private chambers.
