As he looked out the window, Aro thought carefully about what he had seen in Forks. Cullen young bride was far more interesting than he had first suspected. She would definitely bear more study in the future. Much clouded his mind while he gazed at the rising sun. The plan had been carefully plotted with every possibility accounted for, except one. While Irina had provided an excellent opportunity, it had been proved false. Caius had used his new toy which made things happen too fast. If the girl had been destroyed in a slower way, things could have moved forward as planned.
As things stood they had another problem to do with though. The story they had been told of a vampire that was purposely creating half breeds was disturbing. Sending Caius on a journey of discovery should sate his thirst for adventure, at least for a while. The revelation that there were many half breeds and the fact that they had gone unnoticed was disturbing to Aro. Depending on what Caius was able to discover about this renegade vampire and what his goals were, things would have to move in a new direction.
As for the Cullens, their chastisement would have to be far more lingering. The Volturi had been embarrassed in front of far too many witnesses. The Council would have to think carefully on how they moved due to Edward’s wife and her powerful and unforeseen gift. With Alice back within their home they were currently an issue that would be set aside to be dealt with later.
Turning from the balcony, he looked to the two men standing in the room. Caius looked up and smiled as if reading his mind. He stepped forward and spoke softly, even for him.
“Where do we move? You have thought long on recent events and new knowledge. The Council awaits your choice but they do not wait patiently.”
“Caius, you will seek out the renegade that is creating half breeds. Take a contingent of the Guard with you just in case you have surprises. I’m sure it’s nothing you can’t handle. As a matter of amusement do not harm the half breed that you find only their Sire. Find out his reasons and his motivation. Also seek out his loyalties and what he values most. If he has the potential to be an asset bring him back to us for evaluation. If not, you may have fun…”
“As you command, Aro. Are we to ignore what happened with your old friend Carlisle and his brood? I did not think you would allow such a slight to pass so easily.”
“My dear Caius, there is a time and a place for all things including retribution. Alice’s gift as well as the young bride must be accounted for in any future plans regarding the situation in Forks and those we have vested interest in. Worry not, their time will come as it does for all who cross the Volturi.”
Caius had an almost feral grin on his face, and almost sadistic zeal overtaking his demeanor, as he strode from the room. Looking to the other vampire in the room, he smiled. Motioning for her to follow him he left his chambers and moved down the corridors toward the Council Hall. As he entered the Council Hall, he noticed several Guards in the chamber that had been more than a little overzealous in helping Caius destroy Iriana. Her sisters almost set things forward but for the speed with which the girl died. He would have to make special note to have Jane chastise those that were too eager and cost them more than they could realize with their over eagerness. Looking away disdainfully, his eyes fell to the Council chairs and noted that all of them were empty but that Jane was of course available at the side of his chair as always.
Her brother has been shaken by the conflict. His talents had never before been challenged and now he doubted himself. Jane was stronger and her sadistic pleasure gave her a drive he lacked.
Calling to several messengers that were always waiting in alcoves, he dispatched messages as were needed to set the next plans in motion. There was much to be done on many fronts, some moves to be made quickly, and some slowly like a chess game…
Moving to his chair he sat slowly down and smiled to Jay motioning to bring the mornings supplicants in to be heard. His mood was a bit peevish and he may decide to let her have her way with a few for entertainment reasons if for nothing else. In truth he paid little attention to the whining of the supplicants; simply voicing platitudes that the matter would be looked into or motioning to Jane if they irritated him enough. He had much on his mind, things far more important than the whining of infants. How had so great an influence escaped the notice of the Volturi for so long?
Carlisle and his family had become quite the force to be reckoned with. Between his direct family and those he had adopted, there were several elements that would be interesting additions to the collection of the Volturi. It would only be a matter of how and when, Aro was rarely disappointed when he decided that he wanted something badly enough. His old friend has been making interesting new friends while they had been apart from each other. The alliance with the shape shifters definitely required a moment of pause. Many things as of late had proved very curious and must be thought on carefully before any hasty action would be taken.
As the last of the petitioners for the morning session filed out of the chamber, Aro felt restless. Perhaps he simply needed some time with his wife. Leaving word with the Guard, he made his way toward the towers where the Wives were kept secluded. Perhaps they would have a day on the town, she always did enjoy visits to the markets and it did so improve her mood when she been in public. Perhaps she would even be civil for a time afterwards…but perhaps not. She had been increasingly agitated over the last century as the world had begun to speed up. You would think that with every modern convenience at her fingertips, she would be more content. All the Wives knew why they were In seclusion. The grief and sorrow that overcame his brother-in-law upon his sister’s death could not be allowed to happen again. The Council would surely be shattered by that pain. That kind of weakness must never be known again. This is why the Wives were In seclusion, for safety, not punishment…
Motioning for the Guard to stay behind, Aro walked patiently toward the stairwell that would lead to his wife’s chamber. Perhaps if he suggested the outing quickly enough, he can avoid to their regular arguments since it would be pointless for her to argue something that was about to be temporarily reprieved…
